A day dedicated to Labours/Workers:
International workers’ day is celebrated on 1st of May every year. IN some places, it is also known as Labour Day or May Day. This day is the celebration of labourers and the working classes, which is promoted by the international labour movement, communists, socialists, and anarchists.
Being a traditional European spring celebration, May Day is a national public holiday in many countries. In some countries, it is celebrated as “Labour Day” or “International Workers’ Day”
History behind May Day:
In the late 19th century, as the trade union and labour movements grew, so many days were chosen by trade unionists as a day to celebrate labour.
1st of May was chosen to be International Workers’ Day in order to commemorate the 4th of May 1886 Haymarket Affair in Chicago. The police were trying to disperse a public assembly during a general strike for the eight-hour workday, and an unidentified person threw a bomb at the police. The police then responded by firing on the workers, and killed four demonstrators.May Day has also been an important official holiday in countries such as People’s Republic of China, North Korea, Cuba and former Soviet Union. In these countries, on May Day, it typically feature elaborate parades including military hardware.
In the year 1955, the Catholic Church dedicated 1st of May to “Saint Joseph the Worker”. Saint Joseph is for the Church the patron saint of workers and craftsmen (among others).
So, the International workers’ day is celebrated in most of the places in the world for labourers, workers. It is also known as Labour Day or May Day.
